Happy Veterans Day

November 11, 2008 · 2 Comments

To all who have served or are currently serving our country, Happy Veterans Day.  Your sacrifice to serve our country means a lot to us and we thank you for it.  I have been fortunate to have had both of my grandfathers serve in World War 2 and survive.

Gramps, my mom’s dad, was in the Battle of the Bulge, where he was captured and became a P.O.W. deep inside Germany until he rescued by Allied Forces.  My dad’s father, Grandpa, who passed away last year, was a medical doctor over in the Pacific Theatre and was going to be in the first wave during the Invasion of Japan until Truman dropped the A-Bomb.

My Uncle Jerry served two tours in Vietnam doing forward air control over the Ho Chi Minh Trail flying the Bronco and also flew missions piloting the F4 Phantom.

Currently, my cousin Otto, who is currently on his second tour in Iraq, is a Marine.  Keep him in your prayers.

For those who treat this as just another day off from work/school, I would recommend that you watch some of the old war movies on TCM or AMC and read some articles/stories on pivotal battles and great war heroes.  After that, say a little prayer for all of our service men and women.  They don’t know us, but they are willing to put their lives on the line to protect us from danger.  Without them, we would be sitting ducks.

David, kudos to your salute. I am surprised to see that this being a blog about El Paso, that you fail to mention Ft. Bliss. Obviously there are a lot of veterans on post. Ft. Bliss is the largest Army post in the U.S. as far as physical size. It’s about to get bigger troop wise as well.

I didn’t do it on purpose. It was more of a generalized thank you to everyone. However, without Fort Bliss, El Paso wouldn’t be where it is now. I am suprised El Paso doesn’t have a Veteran’s day parade. Maybe they do and I missed it?
