Socorro, TX = Missions, Art Galleries, & More

I went to go look at a home for a possible listing yesterday that was located off of Socorro Rd.  This was my first time to venture out that way and I had no idea what to expect….I think I may have found one of my new areas to explore.  Not only is the mission trail located along the way but so are some interesting restaurants, art galleries, and other interesting landmarks.

As you drive in to Old Socorro (is it Historic Socorro? I forgot what the sign said)  there is this giant wall with what appeared to be mostly older men with balls that were playing a game.  I drove by to quickly to get a good eye but for those that know, what game is it that they were playing?

As far as the missions go, I have yet to still go visit any of the missions in along the Trail but that I hope to change that fairly soon.

The El Paso Region is full of many surprises and even after almost 4 years of exploring, there is still so much to see and experience.

Revealing Whole Foods To El Paso Tweet?

I tweet Whole Foods at times…mostly telling them that they need to build a store here…well this was  a reply to a tweet that I sent them a couple days ago.  Am I over analyzing or does this sound like they will be building a store here soon?

Downtown Baseball Stadium Poll

The guys on KROD ESPN 6oo were talking about the possibility of affiliated ball coming back to El Paso….if it did, Cohen would not be an option.  With downtown as the most likely destination, would you support the funding of a new ballpark?

The Royalty & NDMF 2012

Music has been on my mind partly today.  It began by listening to some tracks by The Royalty.  I missed them last year at the festival, but that’s ok, because I just heard them today….and they are really good.  If you haven’t heard them yet, you can check them out on Myspace, Facebook, Twitter, etc

With that said, I’m getting excited about the 2nd Annual Neon Desert Music Festival.  Last year was a lot of fun and I’m excited to see what this year’s lineup holds…btw…it will be released on Feb 16th.  tickets go on sale Feb 1st.  $45 for early bird $150 for VIP.    For those that forgot their experience or have yet to experience NDMF, here is a video to show you.

Expanision In HEB’s Crosshairs for 2012…Is El Paso Included?

San Antonio newspaper website, mysa.com, is reporting that HEB plans on expanding or opening 22 stores in Texas and remodel a few dozen more.  So is El Paso included???

Nope…at least not in written word.  HEB plans on opening another 5 stores in Mexico (Monclova, Saltillo, Victoria, & another in Monterrey)   It looks like most of the new stores are going to be in Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, and other Central Texas locations.  Who knows though, maybe the Butt’s will surprise with our very own store here in El Paso…I know the city and developers have been trying to persuade them but they are still unsure.

That’s the latest…you can do your part though by contacting HEB directly and ask them kindly to locate a couple stores in the El Paso area.

FARAH UPDATE (a.k.a THE FOUNTAINS):  There is a lot of dirt moving at the site currently as work has really taken off.  Get ready for some better shopping options El Paso!

You Guys Leave Too Soon

I don’t post for a couple days and you guys vanish like ghosts….   Well, I’m back.  This past weekend I was up in Ruidoso to take advantage of a 100% open Ski Apache.  It was packed but the skiing was great.  The only fall I had occurred when I was bringing lunch to the table and slipped on a piece of ice….chili made it to the table but the hamburger flew up in the air and scattered with the wind as I landed square on my a**.   The only thing wounded was my pride but it definitely drew a few laughs from the lunch crowd of skiers hanging around.

Some topics I plan on touching this week include the $500 million dollar bond project…the public needs to attend these input meetings so  I hope to see you there.  Also, there was the annual Puzzler race this past weekend, Chipotle is getting closer to opening up its doors, the History Museum has some exciting exhibits coming online and Lynx Exhibits is hanging out with super crocs.

Other Downtowns Are Trying To Find Solutions Too

I came across an article from the October Edition of the Fresno Bee.  Jim Boren, columnist for the Bee, talks about how city leaders have chased after every easy fix that has come before them to make downtown fresno a hot spot again.   One quote stood out in particular.

“Instead of methodically building downtown as a destination for residents, they’ve fallen in love with out-of-town consultants, and the solutions they push to desperate cities.”  

Fresno built a downtown stadium a while back but according to this column, it looks like it didn’t bring the results that some were hoping for…at least yet.

So how is El Paso doing?  Honestly, I think we are doing ok right now.  There has been a strong emphasis on the arts and a few local individuals have put up their own money to restore buildings in the downtown area.  Downtown revitalization needs not be forced but allowed to grow on its own time.

It will be interesting to see what projects are included in the upcoming bond election…will there be a stadium or arena included?  Do you think El Paso has gone after too many easy fixes itself?  If not, do you think we are headed down that path?  I would love to read your responses in the comments section below.

Paragliding On the West Side?

As I made my way home two days ago, I spotted what appeared to be four parachutes landing near the new Cimarron subdivision off of Resler near Transmountain.  I wasn’t able to get a pic of those guys but a few minutes later I spotted two other parachutes.  I think these were powered paragliders but I’m not positive.  It was an awesome day to be out though and the backdrop with the mountains was beautiful.  If anyone knows who it was, let me know in the comments section.  I think it may have been the guys from the El Paso Paragliding Training Center
