So That Is What Was In the Mysterious Asarco Time Capsule

Thursday night at the El Paso Museum of History featured a great opening for a photographic exhibit documenting the deconstruction of Asarco and the unveiling of a Time Capsule that preserved memories from Asarco decades ago.  Featured inside the metal box were a newspaper from that day it was buried back in the 70s, a 1975 quarter, documents, and more.  I highly suggest you go to the museum to see everything in its entirety.

Carol Eastman, local photographer, captured some beautiful photographs that will forever hold the memory of the structures of Asarco that have been torn down.  Jackson Polk is in the process of putting together a video that he and other shot that will also document the history of Asarco.  The museum features a three minute preview of what they have put together so far.

Remember, access to he museum is free, although they do gladly accept donations.  Take pride in El Paso’s past and go check out this exhibit.  We should fee fortunate that our city has an entity that is dedicated solely to preserving our past so that future generations can learn about the strong culture and events that make El Paso what it is today.

Here is the video that was shown at the Museum.

A look into the past of San Francisco

My dad forwarded me an e-mail with a video that shows San Francisco during 1905.  I want to share it with you today because I believe you will be as fascinated with it as I was.  A few things to look for:

  • Policeman
  • Lady in a huge dress hopping on a street car
  • Young boys running behind the back of a vehicle
  • Newspaper boys
  • People  taking really large steps

I hope you enjoy it! Also, I have attached a modern day look at the same street shot in 2005.

Park teaches El Paso history

There is a park on the west side of town that points out different aspects of El Paso’s history.  I snapped a few pics and put them together for you.   To see the full size, just click on the picture.

Da Vinci Experience worth the price of admission!

Before I headed out of town on Thursday I made sure to stop by the El Paso Museum of History to check out the traveling exhibit, The  Da Vinci Experience.  Kids and adults of all ages will enjoy learning about this true Renaissance Man whose talent was seen in both inventions & paintings.  While some of the pieces are “no touch” there are others that are and I felt that some sense of wonderment that I often felt as a child when learning about new things.

For more info, visit post.  http://livingelpaso.wordpress.com/2010/01/12/the-da-vinci-experience-kicks-off-in-el-paso-on-jan-16th/

Butterfield Trail Marker Ceremony

I attended the official Texas historical marker dedication ceremony today over at the Butterfield Trail Golf Club.   It was a beautiful day for a nice dedication.  The County Historical Society has done a great job with recognizing historical landmarks in the city and it continued today with the Butterfield Trail marker.  While I was there, I got to take a few pictures, enjoy!

Meeting of the John Wesley Hardin Secret Society

John Wesley Hardin:  Gunfighter, Outlaw, Gambler, Gentleman?    This is a person who I look forwardjohnwesleyhardin3to learning more about as time goes by.  I was told about an annual re-enactment of when he was killed that takes place every year on August 19th in Concordia Cemetery where Hardin is buried.  I’ve done a little research and found this site to have some good info about him and an even more complete bio on him here.

If you would like to go watch the re-enactment, it will take place Wednesday August 19th (tommorow) @ 6:30 p.m.  Cost is $5 per person and $2 for Military/Seniors/Children under 12.

Here is a link to the website if you need more info.

There is a song that plays on the website above from the movie Quigley Down Under, so I thought I would share it with you because whenever I hear it, it now makes me think of El Paso and all of the history that has taken place in this southwest town…even though the movie takes place in Australia.

Blast to the past at the War Eagles Museum

I happened to be driving on Artcraft yesterday and I got the sudden urge to drive to the War Eagles Museum in Santa Teresa.  For $5, I got to see aircraft I had only read about or watched television shows about.

When you walk into the large hangar, you are greeted by music from the 30′s & 40′s.  I felt as if I was in another time period.  I got to see not one, but two P51D Mustangs, a P40 Warhawk, and a P38 Lightning!  Some of you might care less, but for plane lovers, these three aircraft are like seeing living baseball legends. Besides all the wonderful planes, there is a fantastic car collection that awaits those who visit.

I’m definitely heading back to the museum because there is so much to read and so many details that I didn’t take in.  If you want to take the family to a place where they can learn a little bit of history and also see it in the flesh…or in the metal…then go to the War Eagles Museum.

I have pictures to share, but I am having trouble loading them.  They will be up as soon as possible!

Dr. Paul Numerof @ History Museum

If you love history or want to know more about the Manhattan Project, then you need to RSVP to El Paso Museum of History  so that you can hear the living words of Dr. Paul Numerof who helped work on the project.   The lecture will take place tomorrow, Saturday July 18th @ 2:00 p.m.

There is no charge but you do have to RSVP by calling 915-351.3588.

I would be there if I didn’t have work, so I hope somebody that reads this blog will attend so that they can give me and everyone else a synopsis of the lecture.

Museum tour in pictures and words

I took two hours on Wednesday to go visit the museums downtown.  Two hours wasn’t enough, but I only had 4 quarters on me.  Our first stop was the Insights Science Musuem.  This place was great!  If you were one of those kids growing up that always liked to touch and play with things, this is your place.  They have this air cannon where one person stands 10ft away and the other person hits the sides of the cannon where a gust of wind will fly out hitting said person in the face.  I think I did that five times.

Get ready for a burst of air!

They also had a great exhibit on Nanotechnology.  The staff is very friendly and informative.  I plan on going back in the near future.  One concept that I would like to see is a unique structure like the HEB Science Treehouse in San Antonio.   That would be a great add on to the museum.

The next stop on the list was the El Paso Museum of History.  This was probably my favorite, only because I love history.  I learned so much about El Paso from just touring the museum.  From the Conquistadors, to the Salt Wars in San Eli and the building of the Trans-Continental Railroad, this place will teach you about all of it.  I am going back again because I need more time to read through all the information.  The facility is also great looking.

They currently have an exhibit on the women of El Paso.  Very interesting to read about the women who helped shape the El Paso of today.

My final stop was the El Paso Museum of Art.  So many pieces of art to look at, it could truly take a day to appreciate every piece.  I had limited time, so I made a fairly quick sweep.  My favorite section was the Kress Collection.  I learned that the building that the museum is housed in used to be the old Greyhound Bus Station.  I would have never imagined that!

One event that I hope to check out is 3rd Thursdays.  Seems to be one of the big events that goes on downtown.  So next time you are in the neighborhood, go check out the downtown museums.  Did you know that the El Paso area is home to 27 museums?  I only visited 3, so I have a ways to go and I look forward to seeing them all.

I think my next visit will be to the War Eagles Air Museum in Santa Teresa, NM.

Also, the first interview for the Living El Paso video series took place today and will be posted on Monday.  I look forward to sharing it with you!

How often do you visit the museums?

I am going to go downtown today and tomorrow to visit some of the museums that El Paso has to offer.  When I was little, we would take field trips to the Witte Museum and Children’s Art Museum in San Antonio.  I always had a great time and think that these destinations are great places for individuals, families, and schools.  I look forward to sharing with you my experience tomorrow.
