A look into the past of San Francisco

My dad forwarded me an e-mail with a video that shows San Francisco during 1905.  I want to share it with you today because I believe you will be as fascinated with it as I was.  A few things to look for:

  • Policeman
  • Lady in a huge dress hopping on a street car
  • Young boys running behind the back of a vehicle
  • Newspaper boys
  • People  taking really large steps

I hope you enjoy it! Also, I have attached a modern day look at the same street shot in 2005.

Pedestrian Bridges Near UTEP

As I drove Mesa yesterday, there seems to be a lot more traffic and many more places for people eat/shop/play.  I turned into a parking lot and ate at Big Town Hero…really good btw.  As I sat there staring at the Don Haskins Center, my mind took me back to basketball/football season.

Especially during basketball games, there are a ton of pedestrians eating at local restaurants or getting a beer at one of the many bars before/after the game…to do that though, everyone has to use cross walks which take a long time and aren’t on long enough to get everyone across.

To cure this problem and to keep traffic flowing, I think  pedestrian bridges need to be put in 2 strategic places along Mesa  near UTEP.  This way people can go back and forth freely without having to wait for a signal at a stoplight and having to hurriedly cross 6 lanes of traffic while watching out for people turning right/left.

What are you thoughts on this?

GUEST POST MONDAY | Shelby In Seattle

This post appeared on April 16th on Seattle Shelby’s musings.  I thought this post captured what living in a truly urban community is like and what we in El Paso could eventually see develop in Sunset Heights, Austin Terrace, Manhattan Heights, downtown, etc… enjoy!  Thank you Shelby for letting me share this!

Living in Wallingford has its perks. The neighborhood is a haven for quirkiness. It’s got a taco truck, the best Dick’s Drive-In in Seattle, and, until this fall, the best homemade doughnuts this side of Pike Place Market. It’s home to Dave Matthews, professors, hippie families, at least one retired semi-professional boxer, a Benson look-alike, and at least 5 chickens (and perhaps a goat and a pot-bellied pig).

I like the fact that my neighbor gave us peppermint, some leeks, a strawberry plant, and 6 eggs. I like the fact that my neighbor has had construction going on for the last 10 years, as she and her husband attempt to restore their home to its original condition. I love the modern structure around the corner that’s 90% hidden by bamboo. I even love the Durn Good convenience store up the street. But my favorite part of living in Wallingford? A yard sign.

There’s this innocuous sign on one-way Thackeray, somewhere between 44th and 45th, on the west side of the street. It’s white and taller than a mailbox. Painted in faded blue calligraphy are the words “Word of the Week.” Ryan remembers the word sign being updated faithfully when he lived here in college. I remember it being updated last year. Unfortunately, there has been no word of the week since August, at least. I’m thinking of taping up a piece of paper with a word and leaving it on the sign to see if someone will resuscitate the practice.

All “word of the week” suggestions welcome…

So I like to dream and think…

I really love El Paso and I go to youtube for motivation sometimes.  I love finding future concepts that people have put together and wonder how they would function/look in El Paso.  It takes a vision to get something started.  I believe El Paso needs to start a competition for locals to create concepts that show what their vision is for the city.  Once you see what local El Pasoans are looking for, it creates a great foundation for future capital improvement projects, developments, and could be a cool event for arts community.  Below are some of my favorite future concepts that I have found.

Community for El Paso area artists

Blue Star Arts complex

Blue Star Arts complex

Wouldn’t a community of artists be great for the city?  A space where all those who love creativity, whether through story, dance, music, or picture, can live and work.  How about utilizing a whole block downtown?  Take some older low rise buildings and convert them into studio/apt/gallery space?  These artists can capitalize on Alfresco Fridays and Third Thursdays.  Maybe a ballet company can move downtown and have huge windows on

the second floor so passersby can watch.  I am just throwing ideas out there and I would love to hear your thoughts.  Tell me what you think and what you would like to see.
