This post appeared on April 16th on Seattle Shelby’s musings. I thought this post captured what living in a truly urban community is like and what we in El Paso could eventually see develop in Sunset Heights, Austin Terrace, Manhattan Heights, downtown, etc… enjoy! Thank you Shelby for letting me share this!
Living in Wallingford has its perks. The neighborhood is a haven for quirkiness. It’s got a taco truck, the best Dick’s Drive-In in Seattle, and, until this fall, the best homemade doughnuts this side of Pike Place Market. It’s home to Dave Matthews, professors, hippie families, at least one retired semi-professional boxer, a Benson look-alike, and at least 5 chickens (and perhaps a goat and a pot-bellied pig).
I like the fact that my neighbor gave us peppermint, some leeks, a strawberry plant, and 6 eggs. I like the fact that my neighbor has had construction going on for the last 10 years, as she and her husband attempt to restore their home to its original condition. I love the modern structure around the corner that’s 90% hidden by bamboo. I even love the Durn Good convenience store up the street. But my favorite part of living in Wallingford? A yard sign.
There’s this innocuous sign on one-way Thackeray, somewhere between 44th and 45th, on the west side of the street. It’s white and taller than a mailbox. Painted in faded blue calligraphy are the words “Word of the Week.” Ryan remembers the word sign being updated faithfully when he lived here in college. I remember it being updated last year. Unfortunately, there has been no word of the week since August, at least. I’m thinking of taping up a piece of paper with a word and leaving it on the sign to see if someone will resuscitate the practice.
All “word of the week” suggestions welcome…
